Augmented Echoes: Gibson's Ghost Maps

An AR experience overlaying speculative, lore-driven points of interest onto real-world locations, inspired by the world-building of Neuromancer and the narrative depth of Interstellar.

This project leverages augmented reality to transform mundane locations into gateways to speculative fiction narratives. Drawing inspiration from 'Neuromancer,' users can use their mobile devices to scan real-world locations, triggering augmented reality overlays that reveal 'ghost data' – fictional lore, hidden histories, or speculative future events tied to that specific place. These overlays would be inspired by the dense, layered urban environments and clandestine operations depicted in Gibson's work. The 'Interstellar' influence comes into play through the narrative depth; each location wouldn't just be a visual element, but a node within a larger, unfolding story. Users could 'collect' these echoes, piecing together a narrative that hints at a grander sci-fi universe, perhaps involving lost civilizations, hidden technological marvels, or echoes of past, unrecorded events. The low-cost implementation comes from using readily available AR development kits (like ARKit or ARCore) and focusing on stylized, non-photorealistic 3D models and text-based lore. The niche appeal lies in its fusion of urban exploration, speculative fiction fandom, and interactive storytelling. High earning potential can be realized through a freemium model: basic location-based lore is free, with premium content unlocked via in-app purchases, such as deeper narrative arcs, exclusive lore fragments, or even user-generated content (with moderation) that expands the fictional universe.
