Chronosigil: The Fictional Cartographer
A bespoke graphic design service creating personalized, stylized infographics and 'lore artifacts' for fictional worlds, from novels and TTRPG campaigns, presented in a unique, fragmented narrative style.
Chronosigil is a niche graphic design service that transforms the complex lore of fictional universes (from authors, Dungeon Masters, or fans) into visually stunning, personalized artifacts. The project merges the data-driven approach of an 'Academic Publications' scraper, the intricate world-building of 'Dune,' and the fragmented, investigative aesthetic of 'Memento.'
Concept:
Instead of creating standard timelines or family trees, Chronosigil produces designs that feel like authentic, in-world objects. Imagine a historical timeline presented not linearly, but as a series of interconnected Polaroid photos with handwritten notes, as if a character is piecing together their memory. Or a noble family's genealogy that isn't a simple chart, but is designed to look like a series of mnemonic tattoos or an ancient, weathered tapestry featuring house sigils and prophecies.
How It Works:
1. Data 'Scraping' (The Consultation): The designer acts as a 'data scraper,' working with a client to extract key information from their source material—be it a D&D campaign history, a novel manuscript, or personal world-building notes. Key entities like characters, events, alliances, and locations are identified.
2. Aesthetic Synthesis (The Design): This raw data is then visualized using a unique 'Memento'-inspired aesthetic. The design isn't meant to be a clean, objective chart but a subjective, narrative-driven piece. Connections between events might be shown with tangled string on a corkboard, key characters might be represented by symbolic icons, and the entire composition feels like a puzzle being solved.
3. The Product (The 'Chronosigil'): The final deliverable is a high-resolution digital file that functions as both a beautiful piece of art and a functional reference for the client's world. Clients can print it as a poster, use it as a prop in their tabletop game, or include it as bonus material for their readers.
Business Viability:
- Niche Market: Targets the passionate and growing communities of TTRPG players, fantasy/sci-fi writers, and world-builders who are willing to pay for high-quality, personalized content related to their creations.
- Low Cost: Operates as a digital-first service, requiring only design software and a platform (like Etsy, or a personal website) to showcase a portfolio. This eliminates the need for physical inventory or high overhead costs.
- High Earning Potential: As a bespoke, high-value service, each 'Chronosigil' can be priced premiumly based on complexity. The process can be streamlined by developing a library of unique design templates, allowing an individual to scale their output and profits efficiently. A secondary revenue stream can be created by selling pre-made designs based on popular mythologies or public domain fiction.
